Margaret Doane, Deputy Director General of the international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) presents on this evening how the IAEA is tackling issues on the global agenda, including climate change, pollution and cancer with new initiatives. These efforts will benefit women. For example, climate change impacts women more women than men because women make up more of poor and disadvantaged communities and those communities are hit harder by climate change. Women are also part of the solution. Women bring new and unique perspectives. Gender parity efforts of the Agency are bringing more women to the table to provide solutions.
Margaret Doane was appointed Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Management of the IAEA on 13 October 2021. She oversees the delivery of the Agency’s financial, human resources, management, administrative, information technology and general services functions, which enable the IAEA to successfully deliver its scientific and technical programmes.
Prior to joining the IAEA, Ms. Doane worked as Executive Director for Operations at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the highest-ranking career position in that agency, with responsibilities for overseeing the agency’s operational and administrative functions and serving as the chief operating officer.
Ms. Doane began her career at the NRC in 1991 as a Special Legal Assistant and subsequently held positions with progressively higher responsibility at NRC. In 2007 she became director of the NRC’s Office of International Programs. In this role, she was the principal liaison between the international regulatory community, the members of the Commission and nuclear policy-making bodies within the United States Government. Between 2012 and 2018, she was NRC’s General Counsel. In recognition of her contributions to the NRC, she received the NRC Meritorious Service Award in 2005 and the Presidential Meritorious Service Award in 2018.
Ms. Doane holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and a Juris Doctorate in Law.
